Meta’s Project Phoenix Headset Shows Up in Quest Firmware
The first clear visuals of Meta’s next headset have surfaced inside Horizon OS firmware, hidden in an updated system app. The device, known under the codenames Phoenix, Stanley, and Loma, is widely reported to be a premium, ultralight, open-periphery headset with a tethered compute puck. Think Quest Pro positioning, but in a much sleeker form factor.
The visuals come from the HorizonOS Prescription Lens app, which ships as a ZIP file rather than a standard APK, so anyone can open it in a plain file manager. An August version was mostly an empty placeholder for pairing prescription lens inserts. The September update adds clear imagery of how those inserts attach and detach, plus how their QR codes get scanned. The renders show a slim headset with glasses-style nose pads instead of a traditional face interface, sensors running along the sides and undersides of the temples, and a compute puck cable attaching at the end of the left temple.
The timing is notable. Meta Connect 2026 is approaching, and the agenda already lists a session titled “A practical guide to controller-free interaction,” which lines up with the Phoenix’s rumored focus on eye and hand input. Expect more detail soon.

ABCD Trains Huge Gaussian Splats With Constant VRAM
Reconstructing large real-world scenes with 3D Gaussian Splatting hits a hard wall: the scene outgrows GPU memory. Researcher Ka Heng Shiu kept running out of VRAM while archiving entire Hong Kong villages and buildings for The Lost Metropolis, an art and heritage project. That frustration turned into ABCD, Alpha-Composited Block Coordinate Descent, an out-of-core training framework he developed with Kartic Subr and presented at SIGGRAPH.
ABCD divides a scene into spatial partitions and optimizes one partition at a time. The trick is that unlike approaches that train several isolated regions and merge them later, ABCD keeps the rest of the scene visually present through cached foreground and background RGBA images. That lets the active region train within the context of the full environment while peak VRAM stays effectively independent of total scene size. It is the kind of result that matters for city-scale capture, digital twins, and game worlds too big to hold in one pass.

Godot 4.8 Dev 5 Adds Mip-Level Texture Streaming
Godot 4.8 is closing in on feature freeze later this month, and dev 5 delivers one of the community’s most requested features: texture streaming. Trevor Davenport’s implementation in GH-113429 works at the mipmap level, loading only the mip levels a camera actually needs at a given distance. That is a significant VRAM reduction for 3D titles with large open worlds.
It is opt-in. You flip streaming on in project settings (with an editor restart required), then import textures as the new “Texture2D Streamed” type, which carries per-texture minimum and maximum resolution overrides so you can protect critical details. The snapshot also fixes alpha scissor shaders that dissolved at distance thanks to overfiltered mipmaps, via Kasper Arnklit Frandsen’s GH-104289, which preserves alpha test coverage on any texture.
Inside the iPhone 18 Pro: A20 Pro Chip and a Dual 16-Core Neural Engine
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are framed as “total AI powerhouse” hardware, and the internals back the claim. The new A20 Pro chip pairs with a vapor chamber covering roughly three times the area of the iPhone 17’s, which Apple says keeps sustained gaming and on-device AI models running cooler for longer. The neural side jumps to a dual 16-core Neural Engine with 50% higher memory bandwidth.
On the camera front, the 48MP Fusion main sensor gains a six-blade variable aperture diaphragm, giving you manual control between f/1.48 and f/4.0 for depth of field. Pre-orders open September 12. For CG folks the vapor chamber and memory bandwidth are the interesting bits, since they point at longer sustained GPU workloads on a phone rather than bursty benchmarks.

A 27KB WebGPU Syntax Highlighter That Skips the Grammar
Shu Ding at Vercel Labs shipped gpu-lexer, a roughly 27KB language-agnostic syntax highlighter for WebGPU shaders. Instead of a hand-written grammar, it tokenizes source into words, whitespace, newlines, and symbols, then runs a tiny WebGPU model that combines local and whole-file context to label each part.
The “language-agnostic” claim is real but measured. The model guesses token types from surrounding source rather than consulting a grammar, so it can highlight languages it never saw in training, including mixed-language files with embedded script and style blocks. It is explicitly an experiment, not a Shiki replacement: on held-out files, about 88% of token labels agree with Shiki, and the author flags that as a measure of agreement rather than objective correctness. Still, a sub-30KB highlighter that runs on the GPU is a neat proof of concept for neural tooling.
Triangle Factory Shelves Breachers: Outbreak
Less than three months after it opened June’s VR Games Showcase, co-op PvE extraction shooter Breachers: Outbreak is effectively dead. Developer Triangle Factory put the project on hold, saying it is a hard time to build and ship a high-quality VR game at that scale, and that the interest so far does not support the project. Some of what was built will reportedly fold into the original Breachers.
It is the studio’s second retreat this year, following the announced November shutdown of Hyper Dash, and it lands in a stretch where The Binary Mill also shelved Survive The Night shortly after reveal. The pattern is worth watching: ambitious standalone VR projects are getting harder to justify against soft install bases.

A Spider-Verse Animator’s Hand-Keyed Venom
Senior CG animator David Han, whose credits span Riot Games, Sony Pictures Imageworks, and Blizzard, posted a hand-keyed animation of Venom tearing through a squad of cyborg soldiers with pro-wrestling moves. Han is upfront that the polish is missing and the cuts are rough, but the energy is the point, and the rigs are linked for anyone who wants to study the shot.
For Maya animators it is a useful reference in making weight and impact read even in a rough pass. Han’s own note, “animating wrestling moves is a ton of fun,” is the right frame: technique first, polish later.
